Goodness, Suffering and God

April 24, 2011 | Nathan Renner

Recently, a friend of mine struck up a conversation with a local philosophy professor while exercising at the gym. Before long, the conversation turned to the most important subject of our time (and of all time): the character of God. Specifically, if God is as good as Christians claim, then why is there so much suffering in the world? This conversation went in fits and spurts every time they would bump into one another. Eventually, my friend told him that he should speak to his pastor (me) about these things, and the professor agreed.

We met and a new friendship was soon forged over stimulating conversation and non-stimulating (for me at least) hot drinks at Starbucks. The conversations were so engaging we thought we should let the local community in on it. On April 7 we formally debated each other on the campus of Columbia College. The room was completely packed and some, unfortunately, had to be turned away at the door. Before the debate began, the professor and I had special …

ARISE Down Under

April 14, 2011 | Light Bearers

When ARISE confirmed that we would be doing a two-week Bible Boot Camp in Australia, we knew that the Lord would have great things in store. However, God has done above and beyond anything we could have ever expected. We had no idea how many people would sign up for the program. We would have been thrilled with 50. At the beginning of March registration surpassed 100. On opening day of the program, 241 eager attendees arrived at the Kingscliff SDA Church for 15 days of intense instruction on how to give a Bible study on the fundamental doctrines of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Roughly half are Kingscliff members with the other half from all over Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea. The attendees are excited and ready to dig into the Word.

Bible Boot Camp is being held in the evenings and weekends to make it accessible to as many people as possible. The instructors are David Asscherick, Matt Parra, and Jeffrey Rosario. David kicked off …

General Conference Report: The Kingdom of Heaven In Your Life Today

April 7, 2011 | David Asscherick

It sounds so official, so formal: The General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.

And six months ago, when I accepted the invitation to conduct the annual Week of Spiritual Emphasis there, it seemed, well, unreal. I heard my mouth say yes. The next week, I received a confirmation letter.

And then I tried to forget about it.

It was on my calendar, right there, March 7-10. But I pretended not to see it. I reminded myself that it was still months and months away. So out of my mind it went.

Until I received the e-mail asking about my theme and titles for the week. They needed them for the posters and the advertising. Posters? Advertising?

So I replied with my theme: The Kingdom of Heaven in Your Life Today. I sent no titles, because, frankly, I didn’t have any yet. As is so often the case in life, six months away rather suddenly turned into six weeks away.

Now that the Week of Spiritual Emphasis …

Thinking About God In Ontario

April 5, 2011 | Jeffrey Rosario

Two weeks ago I finally made it back up to Canada. It’s been almost three years since the day I crossed the border to get back home into the US, California bound. That was after five years of ministry up in sunny (not!) Vancouver. I still remember flying down Highway I-5 South with a grin, drooling and not looking back (no offense Canadians)!

But anyways, I felt privileged to be invited by an Adventist university group to give some presentations at the University of Western Ontario, which is about two hours from Toronto.

It’s a very secular university with some 30,000 students. So anything goes. Which was to our advantage. But also a challenge. The meetings were held in an open roofed entrance hall right in the center of the action. As we were doing sound check, several hockey teams came marching in shouting strange things, in some sort of ancient Canadian ritual processional, or something. I’m thinking to myself, “Is this what I’m up against during my entire presentation?”

The Big Apple Was Sweet in March

April 4, 2011 | Jeffrey Rosario

So I have a new church on my ‘favorites’ list. It’s the  Church of the Advent Hope in New York City. I’m still savoring the blessings from my visit in early March. The church meets at a nice little building in Manhattan’s Upper East Side about two blocks from Central Park. If that sounds yuppie, it’s because it is. Some big shot people have called this neighborhood home. People you might’ve heard of—Lady Gaga, Spike Lee, Madonna, Ralph Lauren, and Rudy Giuliani to name a few.

The weekend was scheduled for three presentations on spiritual revival and growth. I was told that it would be a church with a young adult atmosphere, but it was better than I expected. On Sabbath morning, the three hundred people present were almost all young adults in their 20s and 30s. Now, I normally preach to young adults. It’s an integral part of my ministry. But when I preach to several hundred of them it’s usually at a convention or special weekend of some sort where young …
