Do you love snow? I’ve always loved it, but today I love it a little bit more. You see, I’ve lived in sub-tropical Australia for the last six years. “Cold” there is 50° Fahrenheit. So, as you might’ve guessed, it doesn’t snow. To be clear, there are places in Australia where it does snow, but not where I lived.

Last month, our family moved back to the United States, Colorado to be precise. And today, after a cold, quiet night’s accumulation, a perfect blanket of snow covers everything. It’s been years since I’ve experienced this—waking up to a thick, uniform blanket of snow, dappled with early morning light, covering everything as far as the eye can see.

Everything.

My mind immediately springs to that blessed promise of “the Gospel Prophet,” Isaiah: “‘Come now, let’s settle this,’ says the Lord. ‘Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, I will make them as white as wool’” (Isaiah 1:18, NLT).

God is in the business of settling things—of fixing, repairing, and sorting out things.

I really like how the NLT renders the invitation from God: “Come now, let’s settle this.” God is in the business of settling things—of fixing, repairing, and sorting out things. He is the Healer and Restorer. God has both the desire and the power to settle the human problem of sin and guilt. So, He makes the invitation to you and me: “Come now.”

God has it sorted. He has a plan, and He wants to share it with you, personally. But you need to come and listen.

And what is His plan? To forgive you your sin, to cover it. He wants to cover it so thoroughly and completely that it cannot be seen. In its place will be beauty and light—a blanket of white perfection.

Like snow.

God’s righteousness given to you. God’s forgiveness covering you. God’s love embracing you.

How did Peter, himself quite a sinner, put it? “Love covers over a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8, NIV).

Yes, having grown up in Wyoming and South Dakota, I’ve always loved snow. It’s fun, beautiful, and almost magical. (Plus, of course, lots of snow meant no school! And when you’re a child, what could be better than that?)

Today, after six years away from the sight that now lays before me, I love it a little bit more.
