Everyone loves a good idea.

Especially when it’s their own.

Now I don’t want to break my arm patting myself on the back, but in this case the good idea was, well, mine.

“What if we dedicated the entire convocation to a single book of the Bible?” That simple question set the creative and energetic minds here at Light Bearers into motion. Ideas, refinements, and suggestions began to pour forth from Ty, James, Jeffrey and the rest of the team. We were onto something good and, like hound dogs on a scent, we were gonna follow it all the way to the end.

And we saw him.

What emerged from that first of several planning sessions was what would eventually become the 28th Annual Light Bearers Convocation themed We Would See Jesus. The chosen book was John’s gospel. It consists of 21 chapters–perfect! Five preachers were selected: Ty Gibson, James Rafferty, Jeffrey Rosario, Nathan Renner, and yours truly. Chapters were assigned; four each.

As part of Light Bearers’ ongoing commitment to and conviction about healthy living, we also extended an invitation to Dr. Jay Sutliffe of Northern Arizona University, who delivered a superb series on health titled Cooperation With Intended Operation.

From July 3-July 7, 2012, we, along with roughly 400 registrants, studied methodically, carefully, reverentially, and enthusiastically through John’s gospel. And what seemed like a good idea in conception, blossomed as a great idea in execution! Each preacher brought their own unique emphasis and personality to the table. A picture began to emerge, beautiful, compelling, engaging, and glorious.

It was a picture of Jesus!

John himself would’ve been both proud and pleased. This is, after all, precisely why he wrote his gospel account. He tells us so at its close:

And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name. (John 20:30, 31)

John wanted people–all people!–to read, to see, to marvel, and then to believe.

Those who came to the 28th Annual Convocation as believers left as better and stronger believers. And those who came as, perhaps, skeptical left beginning believers. And, gloriously, 11 who came as beginning believers left as baptized believers!

Yes, Sabbath was a high day indeed as 11 dear souls trusted completely to the life, death, and resurrection of John’s Messiah and Friend.

Jesus was His name.

And we saw him.

Postscript: Couldn’t be there? Plan to be here next year! Details will soon be available for the 2013 Convocation. Also, the whole event was recorded on video (A huge thank you to Better Life Broadcasting Network!).
